Competent Person Classes

OSHA defines a “Competent Person” as “one who by way of training and/or experience, is knowledgeable of applicable OSHA Standards, capable of identifying existing and predictable hazards in the surroundings or working conditions which are unsanitary, hazardous, or dangerous to employees, and who has the authority to take prompt corrective measures to eliminate those hazards."


Note: The Competent Person designation is an employer designation and this training will help satisfy this requirement. 


However, the employer is responsible for actually making this determination.


These courses are designed for individuals who may be designated by the employer as the Competent Person on a site.


These courses enable individuals to recognize hazards and to correctly use procedures to minimize these hazards.





Excavation and Trenching

OSHA requires that at least one person be trained as a competent person for excavation sites. In compliance with OSHA 29 CFR 1926.650 subpart P regulations, this excavation training is required for workers and supervisors who work in trenches and excavations. 


This excavation training covers the OSHA Excavation Standard and safety and health aspects of excavation and trenching.

Fall Protection

Students will receive all of the proper training pursuant to OSHAs requirement of Competent Persons for this standard 29 CFR 1926.500.  

This course goes beyond the basic awareness level of introductory courses and into details necessary when learning not just how to protect yourself, but what it takes to create a safe working environment for those you may be responsible for.

Forklift Competent Person Training

Our Forklift Training for the Competent Person Course takes all of the information covered in our basic Forklift course and expands on it to include knowledge and training on the duties and responsibilities of the competent person working on job sites with forklift activities.


This course has been developed directly from the OSHA standard for forklift safety - 29 CFR 1910.178.


Topics include:


  • Safe Forklift Operating procedures as per manufacturers recommendations
  • Capacity requirements
  • Minimum Safe Approach Distance 
  • Load charts and capacity charts
  • Overhead clearances
  • Full function hands-on test

Scaffolding

A comprehensive Scaffolding for the Competent Person Course covers all of the important training that a competent person in this potentially dangerous area of work needs to have.

This course teaches essential skills with hands on practice for scaffolders, scaffolding supervisors, foremen, safety officers, safety engineers & all the relevant personnel who are required to work with & around scaffolding operations

This course covers topics required for competent persons by 29CFR 1926 Subpart L:


  • Competent person requirements and responsibility

Silica

This course provides initial training for persons designated by their construction management to act as the Silica Competent Person for their site.

The OSHA Construction Regulation (29 CFR 1926.1153) for Respirable Crystalline Silica has recently been revised and a greater focus has been placed on the hazards of Silica exposure.


Topics Include:

  • Understanding the main elements of 29 CFR 1926.1153
  • Understanding regulations elements and applying them to jobsite specific applications
  • Defining the roles, responsibilities, expectations and limitations of both the silica competent person and a qualified person within their company program
  • Suggested skills and capabilities for the Silica Competent Person
  • Personal Protective Equipment, as applicable
  • Elements of an exposure plan
